Background

Food waste

Nearly 59m tonnes of food are wasted in the EU every year. This equates to 131kg per inhabitant and about €132bn. This comes at the expense of vast resources and energy. Food waste is clearly bad for business.

Food companies can reduce waste with smart technology to prevent surpluses, using by-products for other purposes and helping educate consumers about what they can do. Deploying these tactics will help reach our goal of halving food waste by 2030.

We will soon publish our guidance on food waste reduction.
