Background

Sustainable packaging

Packaging accounts for 40% of plastics and 50% of paper used in the EU and each resident generates an average of almost 180kg of packaging waste per year. As major users of packaging, EU food and drink businesses must adopt sustainable packaging and cut down on packaging waste. This means creating more circularity, using more sustainable materials, and reducing the quantity of both packaging and materials. At the same time, food safety and quality cannot be compromised.

We will soon publish our guidance on how to ensure more sustainable packaging.
