Paulig Adopts Regenerative Wheat for Tortilla Production

Published: 02/12/2025

Paulig’s total climate footprint originates mostly from raw material farming, with 70% stemming from this area. Therefore, there is a particular focus on raw materials such as wheat, coffee, and corn.

Already, nearly 25% of the wheat used in Paulig’s tortilla wraps comes from regenerative farming programs. Their work with Lantmännen in Sweden and Paniflower in Belgium and Germany has helped cut wheat farming emissions by up to 30% on selected farms.

Partnership for a Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystem

Paulig partnered with Paniflower, a milling company, and BAT Agrar, an agricultural trading company, along with German wheat farmers, to establish the foundation for a sustainable agricultural ecosystem. A primary goal is to reduce the climate impact of wheat production for tortilla wraps by up to 30% within the next three years.

This project empowers farmers to implement regenerative farming practices, such as cover crops, under-sown crops, resilient wheat varieties, biostimulants, biodiversity zones, and optimized nutrient management. Together, these initiatives aim not only to lower GHG emissions but also to enhance biodiversity and improve soil health, contributing to the resilience and long-term viability of farming operations. Paulig gathers data at the farm level on factors influencing environmental impact to closely monitor progress and optimize outcomes.

As a result of this collaboration, the first tortilla wraps with a reduced environmental footprint have been available to European consumers since 2025. Tortilla wraps represent Paulig’s largest product category, with their Roeselare factory in Belgium producing approximately 500 million tortilla wraps annually.
