The application of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) on the 12th of August marks the beginning of a new implementation phase, where legal certainty will depend on close and timely cooperation between the Commission, Member States and industry.
FoodDrinkEurope supports the Regulation’s objectives of reducing packaging waste, improving recyclability, increasing the use of recycled content, promoting reuse and refill and strengthening the functioning of the Single Market through a harmonised regulatory framework.
Packaging plays a crucial role for the food and drink sector. Achieving the environmental objectives of the PPWR, therefore, requires solutions that deliver environmental benefits while maintaining the high standards of food safety, product integrity and affordability that consumers expect.
The sector welcomes the Commission’s updated PPWR FAQs, including guidance on the first enforcement phase. While this represents an important step towards greater clarity for companies, legal certainty will ultimately depend on a timely and consistent application of this guidance by Member States and market surveillance authorities across the EU.
FoodDrinkEurope will continue to work constructively with policymakers and stakeholders throughout the implementation process. Close cooperation between the Commission, Member States and industry will remain essential to ensure the consistent and effective application of the Regulation in the years ahead.
The application of the PPWR is therefore not an end point, but the beginning of a critical compliance journey for businesses across Europe.
