FoodDrinkEurope urges EU leaders to support VAT anti-Fraud Package

(Brussels, 22 May 2013): The food and drink sector is greatly impacted by fraudsters cheating basic VAT rules in a number of EU countries. The anti-VAT Fraud Package proposed by the European Commission and driven forward by the Irish Presidency would provide for a structural solution to this recurring problem.

(Brussels, 21 May 2013) FoodDrinkEurope’s ‘Annual Report 2012’ details a year of achievement and active engagement for FoodDrinkEurope, the trade body representing Europe’s food and drink industry - Europe’s largest manufacturing sector in terms of turnover and employment (1).

Barroso: “F&D industry back to, or above, pre-crisis levels”

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso speaking at the 11th European Business Summit in Brussels on 16 May, mentioned that despite the latest industrial outlook pointing to a general mood of uncertainty, some sectors, like the food and drinks industry and pharmaceuticals, are already back to, or above, pre-crisis levels.

Food taxes rejected in favour of comprehensive approach to obesity

Discriminatory food taxes introduced by some EU member states to discourage the consumption of certain foods sidestep the larger challenge of encouraging consumers to adopt healthier lifestyles and pose a risk to the competitiveness of the food and drink industries of the EU, agree EU social partners in the food and drink industry.
